RIP Reg Varney

Post by york65 » 16 Nov 2008, 19:27

RIP Reg Varney - another great comic actor from the halcyon days of comedy passes away. On the buses was a classic (and a great inspiriation to Phipps of the Forum no doubt).
God bless

I read he was 92 when he died...which means he must have been in his mid 50s when he was playing Reg...slightly "older" than his character seemed to be behaving, living with his Mum and chasing after all those clippies :lol!:

By the same token the two main actors in Steptoe were much closer in age than you might have though...i.e. old man Steptoe wasnt as old as he looked

Same with Jonesie from Dad's army, he was 20 years younger than he appeared to be...

I suppose that's what acting's all about...

Jonesy looks EXACTLY the same..always been amazed at him!

the woman who played Olive in On The Buses (and is in Eastenders every now & then) was on 5Live this morning...SHE didn't know Reg Varney's true age either, even to this day...she said she was amazed when the announcement mentioned he was 92!

I had the On the Buses board game when I was a kid...

Just remembered that one of the destinations was Cemetry Gates...I wonder if this was an inspiration for the Smiths song of the same name...

Bloody sad news this was..........
I never had the inspiration for driving from this programme, but from when I visited Malta a few years back.
I guess him & Jack are "upstairs" driving a proverbial Bristol Lowdekka somewhere.

Do you drive a bus for a living Phipps? How were you inspired by Malta?

I don't mean to pry, and I know it's none of my business - I'm just interested.

Filmed at Prestatyn, Rhuddlan and the surrounding area.

Been over that bridge where they fall into the River Clwyd loads of times.
