Looking for Leather Nun / Crash Course In Science / Einsturzende Neubauten / Throbbing Gristle type stuff .... any suggestions?

I kind of know what I want to hear but am far too youthful to know where to start

Go to last.fm, click Radio and punch one of those bands into the search box - you'll get a radio station centred around that band, playing not only their songs, but ones by related bands as well. That should give you a good idea of what else is out there.

Yeah Killing Joke and Cocteau Twins out of that lot Mark's mentioned. I made it a priority to get everything CT ever did. Hard to get all their stuff but happy to have most of it.
